For longer runs of over 1 hour, however, and, of course, on race day, make the effort to get up early enough to eat a proper breakfast; at least 1-2 hours before you run. Oats, in the form of muesli or, my favourite, a bowl of hot, steaming porridge are a great option for runners.

The main problem with eating before running is nausea and burping up your breakfast during your race. Once the food moves from the stomach to the small intestine, most people are fine (some people experience cramping, but this is uncommon in healthy runners).
First, your pre-race breakfast should be exactly the same as what you have eaten before your longer weekend training runs.
Eat things you regularly eat/drink before long runs (nothing new on race day). Mostly carb, some healthy protein/fat (no surprises here).
